Re-furbishing or rather re-building the old Bedford Hotel came with ‘great social responsibility’ given the building’s location and historical importance. The architectural response took a totally fresh, modern approach using materials that addressed the beautiful but harsh sea-facing environment. Our primarily element was glass – acting as a visual connection to the people of Port Shepstone whilst making the most of the gorgeous sea views. Other elements include timber, stone and galvanized steel - all harmonised together to provide visual interest, texture and versatility; enabling the new structure to be used as Retail or Office spaces where owners and tenants can enjoy the merging of a piece of the past, with the face of the future.
