UNITRANS
Status: Completed 2010
Location: Riverside Business Park, Durban
UNITRANS’ hub presented specific logistical requirements: sufficient yard area to accommodate storage of 7000 drums, facilitate a diesel bowser and space for the loading, turning and parking of articulated vehicles. The 3500m2 warehouse, 13m high, is utilized primarily for racking and is relieved by a height reduction to 8m over the marshalling area. A 10m wide cantilevered canopy extends over 7 concrete framed roller shutter doors. A contributing factor to the warehouse’s success is utilization of natural light by using polycarbonate sheeting located in the side cladding to the ends of the building where there is no racking. High-level ventilation, through use of horizontal louvers, satisfies the smoke ventilation requirement, and provides natural ventilation and cooling, culminating in a comfortable, healthy working environment. The double storey 400m² office component has strategic visual connection with the entrance and exit, and the warehouse and marshalling areas. The separate parking area and traffic flow ensures minimal interference between the administration and warehouse operations.
